Hi, everyone!
New to the site and just wanted to ask if anyone had come across the Pocket Bellows by Epiphany Outdoor Gear? :campfire: A friend bought some whilst we were on business in Arizona last months and tried them out in a damp wood in the Peak District last weekend! I have to say they are a great little tool to focus oxygen right into the middle of a fire.
I am however going to head down the local scrap yard and find an aerial from an old Escort or similar as, essentially, that is what they are!
Anyway check out the video of them in action and let me know what you think!
Thanks

Go to any DIY store and they'll have something similar in the section where all the metal bar is. Alternatively make one for free from a hollowed out elder stick.

Use a bic pen with the top off and the ink tube and nib taken out,or you'r 2 thumbs and 2 index fingers together so you have a small hole in te middle and blow, down next to you'r fire.

Yeah definitely, I think a car aerial would be perfect as they collapse down to a small size!

Like the idea of using a Bic pen. They made great pea shooters at school too!

Or, alternatively, you could use your hat (waving back and forth) ;).

I have seen those in action and they are noisy, make you look ridiculous but really effective

A travel fan is also pretty good for encouraging fire. Very effective when the bbq charcoal is a little damp. :campfire:

I use an old aluminium arrow shaft. This also allows me to push/move pieces of wood that are burning.
I have two, one around 12" long that fits in a side pouch and another 24" long that goes in with my axe and bucksaw.
I like the longer one as I don't need to bend down as far.

I guess I've been lucky not to need to coax fires as much; I just blow on it a little with my mouth or fan it with a flat-ish object like a hat, plate, tray, etc. If I'm in a hurry, I have been known to hold a desk fan beside the BBQ to get the briquettes going in no time. :o

Heinnie Haynes sell a product especially designed for the job. Its no more than about three inches long in its case and weighs next to nothing. Tried one out at a meet last weekend and was very impressed.

I use two old tent poles from a one man tent, cut to length. They are aluminium, so quite light, and the ideal diameter. One fits partly inside the other (as tent poles do!). The whole thing is about 20cm long when pulled apart. A bit of tape around the narrow part of one pole gives a reasonable seal, and another bit around the 'mouth part' stops me ripping my mouth apart when it's cold.

I've taken to using a piece 8mm Stainless pipe I had as a scrap piece in the tool box.
