View Full Version : axe rebuild...
had this cheapish B@Q axe for about 10 years and im thinking about re shaping and handling it? have no idea if the steel is any good? but will give it a go re heat treating it... maybe use a little fire cement and get a hamon going?
here it is... any advice appreciated

the steel should be ok takes a lot of heat to anneal metal but if you start grinding at the head it might heat up a bit too much and loose its temper
will be re heat treating after grinding... just interested to find out how it hardens and tempers and what sort of cutting edge it produces? being mystery metal it'll be guess work... will give it a go

You are likely to find that only the unpainted section or part of is hardened as is the case with most modern axe heads, you will see the difference when you start grinding.
Polishing the cheek area should highlight the transition.

Yep me too, it's a love of mine the axe.
well heres the progress so far... rough ground with the angle grinder... will be moving on to the belt sander to tidy it up before rough sanding and heat treat

Looking good so far, I'm sure it will lok a lot better once you've sanded and treated it
well that was fun! bit of a slog with the grinder but ready for a handle... not 100% sure about the profile yet but will try it first
