had the forge going to heat treat some blades today and thought about making some charcloth... i had an old tobacco tin so punched a small vent hole in the lid, went and found an old 100% cotton T shirt and cut it into small 2"x4" rectangle pieces, popped it in the tin laid flat, put the lid on and placed on the embers to cook... loads of smoke poured out the vent hole but after a few minutes slowed to nothing so took the tin out and let it cool.
when opened the cloth had turned black! tested it with a steel and it works... simple to do.
