hi Jacob and thank you, just a simple wood stain then a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil does the trick, but a regular anointing helps.

thanks fellas, feeling humbled here. and thank you Bernie, about 4/5 years now? i love doing these miserable old gits! and tarheelbrit absolutely keep carving! they become a bit easier each time i promise you :) my first efforts were rough! but i kept at it. there are some superb carvers out there and i still strive for 'the one' that makes me ok with it. and dont forget to post up your results! once again thank you all for your great comments on this friendly site, hopefully see you around a fire sometime :)

They can be done with nothing more than a good sharp pocket knife. Some will add a small gouge called a V tool for doing stuff like the beard. A small gouge is nice but not really required. I've done a number of them with my Swiss Army knife having a short blade is really nice

Using just my Mora, a Gerber suspension multitool and my son's curved blade Swiss army knife.

I know, need to get a longer timber, this really was just to try it out...
Little did I know the this was from topiary (Yew) , that had been trimmed recently...
Hard and sticky as anything, blunted all 3 blades.
Next one, I'll be choosing a apple tree branch , from a tree that has been trimmed last winter.
Or any fruit tree actually...
Won't be adding cinnamon and oil to the timber to get contrast like I did here and I'll definitely get a longer timber.

Maybe a little flexcut multifunction tool on wish list.

Have a look at the small carving set (http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-8-piece-detail-carving-tool-set-200112)from Axminster tools, cheap and versatile. well done mate :)

your choice of wood Yew, be careful. yes very hard and very poisonous, dust sap fruit and fumes if burnt, just saying :) I had a go with a piece of yew myself recently, but with all the right PPE!

One of the guys today on the Bushcraft walkabout Tam (Thomas) who teaches & carves wood spirits, said he can incorporate a wood spirit into my walking stick no problem. He actually offered me a already completed walking stick for free, I had to decline his very kind offer as I've got more than I can use for now. It contained some awesome work & detail in such a small narrow space. Tam said a similar design can be incorporated into my lower/mid walking stick shaft or nearer the top handle.

Awesome bit of carving there, on an old Oak tree, from a very humble and talented man , Nick "Dreadhead".

He likes to make things and leave them for people to find and rumour about...

Some say it's the pixies and goblins that carve these out ,as he's done a few more, but I know this "goblin" and he's actually a good Samaritan.

This carving was done as a demonstration, on an outing with some "disfunctional" kids that needed guidance and support for straightening their life out... crafts and outdoor activities seem to be the choice for most .


I've been meaning to scout it out for months , and only managed it today...
Well worth the wait.

How good are the axminster mini carving chisels compared to some of the alternatives? I have basic flexcut set, but could do with a few more chisels.

Yes, I saw the recomendation, but they looked a lot like the very cheap ones you can get and so I was a bit dubious as to how good they actually are. If they are ok, thats 8 chisels for the price of just about one flexcut. 😉

I've finally managed to finish off my latest walking stick (staff) with a woodspirit. As the staff was originally resourced from the "old" Glasgow (East end) & connections with the Druids, I'm naming referring to my staff as the "Wood..spirit of Glasgow". (don't moan). The staff as we say is "as straight as Katie's leg" (old Doric Scots saying) meaning it's crooked. At present I'm thinking of allowing the staff to retain it's own colour through wear & tear "but" I'm also thinking about colouration from the ancient use of either ground ochre or haematite iron pyrites pigment. Both pigment colours have been tried & tested on a scrap piece of wood, which I'm impressed with the outcome. I've resourced some information from the Mitchell library books on Glasgow in the Dark Ages. "Glasgow's secret Geometry" and talk of Druidic Moon worship in the Necropolis (fact) near where the wood was resourced. There's loads of links to this area including the Romans. I'll post a photo of the woodspirit when I have time.

BTW.. I was walking along the town centre to catch the coach home & was chatting to a couple of Community Police Officers. I wasn't told off but "advised" in a friendly manner my staff could be classified as a weapon unless if I place a rubber stopper on the end (NO metal tip) then it is classed as a walking stick aid (I've been informed of this before a longtime ago) :confused2: a old friend of mine had a cricket bat in his home doorway (lobby) for home protection (ahem) he was advised likewise unless there is a cricket ball besides the bat, it can be classed as an offensive weapon. I was intending to finish off the end of the walking stick (staff) with a rubber stopper to avoid damage to the working end anyway. When your build like a brick outhouse who needs a walking stick as deterrent?? :p

Aye "the Glesgae Polis" (Glasgow's finest) have had a hard reputation. I had a chat with them & they did like the woodspirit & connection as described "but" recommended for future reference about the application of a rubber end stop & walking aid. Slightly O.T a couple of locations I use regularly to set up my basha, I always inform the local Constabulary of my intentions for my safety & for good reason. They're usually quite helpful & take an interest in these matters. (touch wood for luck 4x2 plank) I haven't had any problems so far or what I have in my Bergen or EDC kit bag for the outing. As said it's still a "big stick" regardless of sticking a rubber stopper on the end.

Hi Woody amazed that this thread is still active! Especially as I have neglected it for so long, my apologies. :)
So what have you all carved lately, any samples to offer up? Rob (wild tracks) and David asked what I finish my carvings with, I did reply but I thought it might be useful here too.

when you are reasonably happy with your carving, (but remember your best one is always next!) apply a of wood dye if needed depending on the wood type, Holly or Ash for instance are very light almost white! When that is dry rub in a clear oil, boiled linseed or teak oil etc.

Now here's a tip to add another dimension to your carvings, when you have applied the stain immediately wipe across the surface of the carving with a cloth, so your taking most of the stain off, but leaving it in the creases and low areas. What this does is give your carved face natural highlights, much better than a solid block of colour, when that has dried you can rub the oil in. Here's a couple of examples. :)
