hello,
A friend of mine Bushcraft enthusiast we were practicing fire lighting recently with various methods of tinder etc.. he produced a tinder scraper made from a broad piece of antler for such purposes just slightly smaller than a tobacco tin lid. This got me thinking. I normally would use the edge of my blade, serrated edge of blade, or saw blade from my SAK & if available the edge of a flint flake/shard. I have a few pieces of Buffalo horn which could be cut to a similar size & is hollow, thick enough for the purpose. This could be cut & shaped with an edge of teeth inset very similar to this primitive scraper in question plus the leading outer edge decorated/carved design pattern. I don't have a photo as yet awaiting such 'but' I hope this give an idea 'gist' of the tool in question. It was fit for purpose BTW & carried along with the firesteel striker & flint, tinder leather pouch.

David

T^ Very interesting :). I'll use my knife blade or a quartz/quartzite flake for scraping, but I love the idea of using antler or horn. Definitely fits the primitive fire kit :).

For scraping I mostly use the squared spine of my knives, often a saw blade, sometimes a piece of granite or such. The goal for me when making scrapings for tinder is to make them more coarse than dust, less coarse than sawdust from a chainsaw.

David_JAFO, I am curious as to what tinders y'all are scraping that you are choosing horn or antler over metal? Are you going more for primitive than modern? Horn or antler will work fine on fungi, inner barks, etc. Would think they would dull too quickly on wood.

Cheers!

hello,
I'm always open to trying something more primitive than modern. A State Side Bushcraft friend sent me photo's not long after I posted the thread I forgot to upload the images Oops.. scraper very similar to images had more of a pattern on upper edge.
