Hammock Quilt Filling

My next project is going to be a hammock quilt. I have found a UK supplier of Down but you have to buy a minimum of a kilo of it and I can't really afford nearly seventy quid including postage at the moment.

Microfibre seems to be the nearest thing and its not a bad price at all. Various sites I have looked at say its a close second to Down but has anybody ever used it to make their own gear. It seems to loft better, you can wash it but will it pack down tight and will it keep you warm on a chilly night.

You can get a really good quilt from DD Hammocks for £50, although I assume you really want to make your own? Perhaps others may be happy to purchase some Down from you to help with the cost?

Why not use an old sleeping bag to make one. ?

I do have a 1kg sleepng bag as part of my pack. It cost me a couple of quid at the carboot sale but it is only for the Summer. The reason for wanting to make one is just down to needing it for colder temperatures and pack size. I have gone from using a 110 litre Bergen to a Berghuaus Cyclops Rock, which is much smaller.

What about getting a old down duvet then getting it cleaned so you can use the down from it to make your under quilt, it could work out cheaper than buying a kilo at £70 and might have more than you need.

I use a 58 pattern sleeping bag for my U/Q I keep it intact and attach it with bungie cord, very warm indeed
