Hello. Been told to intruduce myself. I'm from East Yorks and a scout leader, which is just an excuse to go out into the woods and light fires. I am more into the green woodwork but do enjoy basic camping. Back to fires though I am really wanting to crack friction firestarting. Just cant seem to do it, we even tried using power drills once and still nothing. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. It would really put my stock up with the scouts.

:welcome: to the forum from N.Wales

I found the best way to learn is for someone to actually show you the tips, there is no substitute for practical experience T^

Thanks for the welcome.
If I can't crack the firestarting soon I'll have to find someone to show me or bite the bullet and go on a course.

Welcome to the forum Snuff. As mentioned, practice is usually the best teacher for friction firelighting, but you can make it easier on yourself by using the best materials you have available. Goat willow is a good timber to use for the hearth and spindle, and solid, slightly curved stick will do for the bow, it doesn't need to be springy if it's got a good curve, and something hard for the bearer block. A couple of limpet shells are a common favourite, as they don't wear down very much at all.
Even with the ideal materials though, some days it just wont work lol.
