I carved my very first sppon last week. I'm really chuffed :)
Took me 5 hours though, I've owned the crook knife for about a year, 1 st time I actually got round to doing it.
The wood was fookin' hard, anyone know what it is?
The spoon on the left is my mates attempt, he's made 5 before. Mine is on the right.
I decided to linseed oil it as the grain was so nice I wanted to keep it as an ornament!

mate I love it! and the pic is done well. Bahco, mora, tomahawk, crook knife and spoons! looks like a bushcrafters floor for sure! now put it in your billy and mark depths / quantity of liquid by carving it into your spoon (if you know what I mean, like a depth gauge)

I never thought of that. Simple but effective.

Looking good - thanks for sharing Jethro.
Just a tip to make life a little easier for yourself, try carving hazel which is green/live wood, don't start with too big a big, split it down the middle and go from there. You'll find it much easier to work being green. With the crook knife remember to cut across the grain not with it.
Look forward to seeing more, happy whittling all! :)

Hi Jethro...Looks to me like you picked a carving knives nemesis. Laburnum...Very hard and kills most steels. Out of interest did the cutting edge of your knife fold slightly, or chip (microscopic) a little ? Best wishes and well done...J

Is there any wood you shouldn't use for making spoons ?
Yew or laburnum primarily (ive carved and used yew spoons tho) or any evergreen woods like pine the turpentine in the sap leave a taste best avoided..

It looks like you have picked Laburnum for your first try. It is a very hard wood and I'm sure your blade didn't like it...Best of luck and well done on your first spoon...Try a bit of Birch next eh...J;-)...

I was commissioned lately to make a big Kuksa for porridge... After the hard work of making the bowl I had some fun with quick knife finished spoons...Have a look at http://spooncarvingfirststeps.blogspot.com/2011/08/tuesday-2-august-2011-project.html for the complete story...J;-)

Had a go at making my first spoon today.. I still need to get some mineral oil for the curing process. Any tips on drying the wood would be appreciated!
I used eucalyptus.

Woah, I missed this thread before but this is the base I organise so I'm really chuffed that at least one (and hopefully more!) folk have gone away with something from it.
