When I first saw it I thought; possibly the remains of an Earth Star Puff Ball - Images here (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=star+puffball&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=955&tbm=isch&imgil=p6aplxkpy0bdXM%253A%253BUEnWWG2LXS23tM%253Bh ttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fbayoubill.com%25252Farchiv es%25252F2002%25252F100702column.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=p6aplxkpy0bdXM%253A%252CUEnWWG2LXS23tM%252C_&usg=__tFcCRoD62x38EqN3EUOGmUB5wHQ%3D&ved=0CD4Qyjc&ei=tEq0VNjKKdHraMa3gfAC#tbm=isch&q=earth+star+puffball&imgdii=_). However then reading Justin's comments a Gall seems more logical.
How hard / firm was it? Quite woody?

I have nothing constructive to contribute, I'm sorry...I'll see myself out.
