The horizontal line on the mirror of a mirror compass.

I recently purchased a Silva Ranger S mirror compass. On the mirror there is a vertical line that I guess is a sight line. But across it, ner the top there is also a horizontal line. What is that for?

I've noticed this on a few sighting compasses, but my Sunnto MC-2D doesn't have that, just the vertical line. I cannot remember exactly, but I believe it is a horizontal sighting line so you can get pinpoint accuracy (theoretically, anyway) on the target.

My guess is that you would use the horizontal line to sight laterally onto your intended target and then fixate it to the vertical line.

If memory serves me, the mirror cross-hair is to obtain a 45° mirror angle. Reading details BobbyBlu has given a more accurate description. I'm sure there was a Ray Mears programme where Ray gave instruction on use of such a compass?
