Hi guys. The volunteer group in my local woodland did the first charcoal burn of the year recently. It was the first one i'd been involved in and i noticed a fair amount of tar around the bottom of the chimneys. The wood we were burning was a mix of hazel, birch and some mountain ash cleared when coppicing. My questions are, will the tar be from the birch or do the other woods produce tar too and if it is a mix can it be used for anything? Atb Daz.

Birch tar can be used for soap, not sure of the implications of mixing with hazel and ash though......

It's probably mostly birch tar but most woods will produce at least a bit of tar so you'll have a mixture. I would experiment with it and see what it's like.
