Does anyone know some ways of sterilizing a knife? I know you can boil the blade, but that might ruin it. Is there any other methods?
Vipe it with alcohol and let it dry up.

That's not going to work Martin - You need to spit on it first to loosen the dirt!

How does boiling it ruin it, you would need substantial heat to screw up the temper.

Sacrifice a virgin mermaid with it.
...then wipe it on your sleeve. :)
Seriously though, wipe the dirt of then put some alcohol gel on it and wipe it off before oiling.

Agreed. Water becomes steam at 100C (232F), and tempering is usually at 375F and up.............

But, I don't know any virgin mermaids anymore....

Its not the temper I'm worried about, all the metal components will expand and then contract and you will lose any epoxy adhering to the tang. Could it warp or crack though?

Depends, but you don't need to boil the knife for a while though, just a short period of time. BTW, why do you want to sterilize it?

I've used it to gut, butcher and skin many animals. I'm not too concerned about bacteria because at -20 nothing really grows that fast, but I just thought it might be a good idea.

Ya, good point, thought you were talking about sterilizing so you could use it for self surgery or something like that. Lol
Should be fine with putting it in hot water for a bit, not boiling but boiled and slowly cooling. What kind of knife anyways?

Its a Grohmann#1, It works great for processing game, and fish. I'm around saltwater a lot and it has served me well, I have found that if you rub the oil from seal blubber on the blade it will not rust.

Good knife. I don't see any issue with using hot water to sterilize it, not even sure if there is any epoxy holding the scales to the handle as well as the rivets. Only one way to find out I suppose. Good washing and alcohol would suffice too.

I still say the sleeve will do fine. If you're really fussy, just make sure you use the one you don't wipe your nose in. :)
