Tree ID please

Can anyone advise what tree this is?

I believe it to be a fallen Alder but as ever with tree identification, I'm not entirely sure!

Looks like Goat Willow aka Sallow aka Pussy Willow.

Hmm, looking at the trunk I was going to say Black Poplar.
What kind of habitat and, more importantly, do you have any pictures of the leaves?

After a little research this morning, I was heading in the direction of a poplar. The leaves don't look like a Willow having seen them in person. I will go back tomorrow and take a closer picture of the leaves.

The habitat was sat back from a canal in a small thinned out forest

The Black Poplar would be OK with a bit of damp ground.
Hard to say without a good picture of the leaves.

After heading back and foraging some more timber, I took some pictures of the leaves. Hopefully this will help in discovering the species of the beautiful thing!

I still say it's a Willow.

Yup, looking at those leaves I'd also go with pussy willow.
Shows how important that seeing as much of the tree as possible is essential. Worth pointing out that willow and poplar are members of the same family, however...

It's a Pussy Willow on the large side then, right? I've never seen one this big!

Crikey, mate - you're not making it easy for anyone, are you?
There's no sense of dimension in those pictures (of the trunk).
Those leaves don't look like poplar leaves. Poplar leaves would be smoother, shinier, and have a more pronounced 'shoulder' (not sure if that's the word, but I know what I mean).

The picture of the trunk alone isn't that helpful - could be one of several types of tree. Black Poplar, being one. The habitat suited poplar as well. But that ain't a poplar leaf and it does look like a pussy willow leaf. Pussy willows, if left to their own devices, can grow up 12-13m. You rarely see them that big since they are often used as decorative trees and get pruned to keep them much smaller.

If I make it easy for you, I never know what differentiates any tree from another because I get answers like 'Willow'.

Google only shows so much! Besides, other people's experiences are much more reliable than a Wikipedia entry!
