No, this isn't going to be about Proust's interminable epic.
Thankfully.
But it's about doing something today that I've not done for an age.
For a while now, when I've gone out and about it's always been with a purpose, even a loose purpose. Perhaps a walk, maybe to take some pictures. That kind of thing.
But what I've not done for an age is just take a hammock out to the woods rig it up and...do sod all. Just a couple of hours in the woods, a small fire, and just sit there, doing nothing more than listen to the sounds of the woods, feel the bones beneath your skin, ponder everything and nothing. Just take it in.
I used to do this quite frequently. But for some reason I just stopped doing it.
So today I went out and relived a fine memory. Sat in the hammock, nimblewill stove burning to make a brew and keep warm, listening to the wind in the trees, the birds, the distant hum of the A20, the occasional aircraft puttering in the sky from the local airfield. And just take it in.
Just reminded me of how much I damn well enjoyed it.
I only had a spare couple of hours today, but tomorrow the whole day is my own. I think I know what I'll be doing.
You should do the same thing, if you haven't for ages. Go on. Relive a fine memory, remind yourself why it is we go out into the woods. No agenda, no goal. Just the woods.
