No, this isn't going to be about Proust's interminable epic.
Thankfully.
But it's about doing something today that I've not done for an age.
For a while now, when I've gone out and about it's always been with a purpose, even a loose purpose. Perhaps a walk, maybe to take some pictures. That kind of thing.
But what I've not done for an age is just take a hammock out to the woods rig it up and...do sod all. Just a couple of hours in the woods, a small fire, and just sit there, doing nothing more than listen to the sounds of the woods, feel the bones beneath your skin, ponder everything and nothing. Just take it in.
I used to do this quite frequently. But for some reason I just stopped doing it.
So today I went out and relived a fine memory. Sat in the hammock, nimblewill stove burning to make a brew and keep warm, listening to the wind in the trees, the birds, the distant hum of the A20, the occasional aircraft puttering in the sky from the local airfield. And just take it in.
Just reminded me of how much I damn well enjoyed it.
I only had a spare couple of hours today, but tomorrow the whole day is my own. I think I know what I'll be doing.
You should do the same thing, if you haven't for ages. Go on. Relive a fine memory, remind yourself why it is we go out into the woods. No agenda, no goal. Just the woods.

Sums it up nicely..:happy-clapping:
I shall make some copies and the next time someone asks the interminable question.." Why do you keep going to the wood, there's nothing there?"...I shall hand them a printed copy..and say "Try it"...:D :D

Beautiful idea, beautifully put. Like Saxonaxe I considered keeping it, to send to the unbelievers.

T^ Some of my most memorable forest tramps have been with no destination in mind, not going anywhere for any particular purpose. It's incredible how much you do take in, and you notice sooooooo much more, all the subtleties...and then the Bigger Picture is revealed :). A lot of people seem to remark that certain places or views make them feel "small"....I think rather that these things make me feel like I, too, am a piece of a most magnificent jigsaw puzzle, or the finest woven web of Inter-Connectivity. I don't feel "insignificant"...I feel humbled, sometimes moved to tears of joy.
