Anyone got an idea what this is?
I'd say it's some kind of lark or pipit but I'm not certain exactly what.
It was taken on farmland that had lots of grassland and also canals/drainage ditches with reeds.
It was about the size one would expect of a lark or pipit.

I'd say it's a sedge warbler.

Only because of the location described by you...

It does look like a woodlark and it could well be...
but the location described lends itself to the sedge warbler...

Did you hear the call or song?

Definitely not a sedge warbler. Too 'speckly' for a sedge warbler. Head shape and beak aren't quite right either. Although there were reeds nearby it wasn't amongst the reeds and you'd expect a sedge warbler to stick to cover.
There were three or four others sitting nearby. Not making any noise unfortunately.
If I had to put money on it I'd say it was some kind of lark, but I'm far from certain.

I thought with the canals and reeds etc it would be the sedge....

Then I reckon its a woodlark, certainly looks like one, especially with the white "eyebrows" (supercilium) and shortish tail...

I maybe wrong though, I'm by no means a bird connoisseur...

it's a chat, or more precisely, a Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra).
With the pale fringing to most feather tracts, I would say a juvenile, possibly part of a family group.

Yes, I think you're right - it does look like a juvenile whinchat doesn't it?
They're not particularly common round this way either.
