Cornwall Bushmeet - 28th Feb - 1st March 2009 - Gathering, Bushmoot, meet

E-mail Print PDF

A lovely start to spring; meeting up with likeminded folk for a group camp over the weekend, sharing skills, knowledge, stories and friendship. camping in the woods by a campfire

Over the past few weeks I've had more and more visitors to NaturalBushcraft get in touch with me and let me know that they too live in Cornwall, so a group of us got chatting on BushcraftUK and also found new local users there too, so we thought we would organise a gathering, bushmoot, meet whatever you'd like to call it!.. A weekend camp with a group of new faces.

The weather was great and the whole weekend was superb, there were probably about 14-18 of us including the kids. And everyone got on really well straight from the off. Even though most of us had never met before the atmosphere was really friendly, people helping each other, sharing knowledge, skills, tips and tricks. It was beautiful to see and a rare event in this modern age; a bunch of strangers meeting in the woods with common interests and just getting on lovely, working almost as one big family.

We had a really large communal tarp with a campfire underneath a nice place for people to sit and play with projects or tell a tale.

We had Justin/Rawshak showing us how to make meths stoves out of pop-cans, a bit of spoon carving as expected, a superb Tracking walk thanks to Rhoda from WorldWild and it also turned into a bit of a wild food walk thanks to Justin, the group tried some Sorrel, Pennywort, Primrose, Plantain & more. We spotted all sorts of tracks, had good examples of Fox, Deer, Badger, Squirrel, plenty of Dens & Scat too.

There were a good few people who tried the fire-bow (fire by friction) too, Steve, Martin, Matt, Scott & Myself all had a go. Everybody did really well and Matt in particular gobsmacked me!.. The first ever attempt in his life and he never even popped the drill out of the socket once!.. and he had an ember. I could tell he had been watching/listening well when others had tried and he took it all in, well done Matt you did superb!

Thank you to the landowner, Chris at Woodland Valley for a lovely venue in the beautiful Cornish countryside and I would like to thank everyone who helped organise this get together. It was a pleasure meeting you all.
